I Have Been a Cacophony

I found this metaphor in a book I am currently reading, The Ground Beneath Her Feet by Salman Rushdie.

[A]t my worst, I have been a cacophony, a mass of human noises that did not add up to the symphony of an integrated self. At my best, however, the world sang out to me, and through me, like ringing crystal.
